Three Views of Melbourne: architecture

Debbie's choice. Formally known as Gypsy village (and still has a site with this name, although we couldn't see many Gypsies). Renamed Sandringham in 1887. Friendly little bayside suburb, famous for its nice little beach, the beachfront rotunda/bandstand, the Sandy pub, beautiful (but not too elaborate) houses in tree-lined streets, and being the former place of residence of Australia's former PM - Bob Hawke. Also, as we discovered, another notable resident was Alan Marshall - author of 'I can jump puddles'. We captured a photo of his plaque below for your perusal.

Sarah's choice - destination - Collingwood. We had little knowledge of Collingwood other than it is the most despised (by some) or loved (by others) football team, combined with our half hour of research about half an hour before we left home. Again, it was raining for most of the day so we had the usual umbrella camera shuffle going on. Blue sky peeped through a few times however, which afforded a few brighter shots. We had a great start to the day at Proud Mary's cafe on Oxford st, where two separate people admired my camera (perhaps helped by the fact that I was pointing it at lots of things). We were feeling a little disappointed by the weather, but buoyed by the nice lunch and good atmosphere in PMs. It was also the site of one of the more interesting T shirts of this photoshoot. Perhaps the best T shirt of the day could become a new theme. Another unexpected bonus was the Peel St Gay pride festival. Plenty of folks who were only too keen for us to capture them in their lovely frocks, or anti-cannibalism face masks... Sarah seemed almost oblivious to the slightly unusual activity, up until we encountered a very friendly couple that really left her wondering if there was something not quite right about some of the Collingwood females.

Foy and Gibson! This was the warehouse that supplied Australia's earliest dept store chain, commonly known as Foy's. That would probably have been annoying for poor old William Gibson and his family.

Proud Mary's cafe has two of the largest chimney stacks of any cafe in the southern hemisphere. They obviously must burn alot of toast in there.

Any hack can get a sunset reflecting off the sea, but few have mastered the salt and pepper shakers reflecting off the table top.

A couple on their way home from the gay pride festival. Despite their friendly exuberance and christmas wishes, Sarah didn't have much to say to them. She later confided that something just wasn't quite right with these nice ladies.
